About Africa-Europe Clusters of Excellence

African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities launched twenty Africa – Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoRE) to address societal and scientific challenges framed by the AU-EU Innovation Agenda.​

CoREs are a new form of collaboration between some of the best researchers from both continents, striving for equitable partnerships in an unequal world. Their launch has been enabled by resources committed by our institutions to address UN Sustainable Development Goals through excellent research, education, capacity building, mobility and innovation.

The CoRE initiative is bringing together partners from 120 institutions across 42 countries.

Radboudumc and Makerere University meet for the Tri-IR CoRE collaboration November 2023

During the visit, the two ARUA/Guild cluster co-leads discussed possibilities for mobility of students mobility in the field of biomedical sciences, clinical training and laboratory training for incoming PhD students and staff to acquire specialist clinical knowledge (including technological and innovative knowledge), outgoing PhD staff training for internships/training in areas such as immunity, and mutual teaching on 'translational science in infection, immunity and inflammation'.

1st KCMUCo Annual International Scientific Conference November 2023

During the two days, participants from Tanzania, Europe and the United States discussed new immunological insights in conditions relevant to East Africa and other areas in the world. Held 6-7 November 2023, the conference was attended by representatives of academia, government institutions and the church.

Prof Gibson Kibiki appointed visiting professor at Radboudumc April 2023

Professor Kibiki is a professor of medicine and consultant physician and endoscopist, who was previously the Founding CEO of the East African Health Research Commission of the East African Community, and the Founding Director of the Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute.

For over twenty-five years he has served as an academician, clinician, research scientist, and leader in the health sector, holding academic positions in Africa, North America, and Europe.

His expertise will complement Radboudumc’s work in research and education in global health, including strengthening collaboration with Africa, establishing new partnerships and promoting equitable and sustainable research programmes between Radboudumc and LMICs.
