About SPICE
Radboudumc is hosting a global Specialized Programme for Infectious Disease Care Everywhere (SPICE) registry of experts to provide effective tailor-made mentorship for establishing successful and long-standing Infectious Disease Management (IDM), Infection Prevention & Control (IPC), and Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) programmes in low resource settings.

Infectious disease management (IDM) essentially consists of identifying the microbial cause(s) of an infection, initiating - if necessary - antimicrobial therapy against microbes, and controlling host reactions to infection.
IDM requires collaboration to achieve more rapid, mutually beneficial and effective responses. This collaboration requires a comprehensive and strategic way of thinking about the problem of infectious diseases in order to minimize the impact. Our experts have experience in a number of regions including Africa, South America, European Union, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
-
Infectious disease management without microbiology and diagnostics is like sailing a ship without a compass. Diagnostics is key in antimicrobial stewardship and preventing antimicrobial resistance.
Our experts cover areas of:
- Diagnostic stewardship
- Setting up a microbiology lab in resource-limited settings
- Strengthening the role of microbiology in AMS team
Their experience spans across Africa, European Union and Eastern Europe, South-East Asia and the Middle East.

Most health care-associated infections (HAIs) are preventable through good infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. IPC requires a practical, evidence-based approach to prevent patients and health workers from being harmed by avoidable infections.
Our experts have experience in establishment of effective IPC systems and practices, prevention of HAI, surgical safety, injection safety, etc. Their experience comes from a number of regions including Africa, South America, European Union, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Establishment of an Antimicrobial Stewardship programme (ASP) in a healthcare facility is a recognised step towards improving antimicrobial use. The general framework of an ASP has three core components, including system prerequisites in place, defined objectives and goals, and an appropriate approach to achieve these goals. Sustainable ASP requires commitment, but also planning and setting up structures and processes.
Our experts have a range of expertise across the continuum of activities related to setting up and running an ASP program in hospitals and other inpatient facilities, stemming from their work in different regions, including Africa, South-East Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
-
An essential system prerequisite for an Antimicrobial stewardship program is surveillance of quantitative and qualitative data on antimicrobial use. Understanding antimicrobial consumption levels and prescribing patterns is an important sine-qua-non to ultimately reduce inappropriate antimicrobial use.
Our experts have experience in using various methods for measurement and surveillance, that can help facilities improve their understanding of antimicrobial use.
-
The determinants of (in)appropriate prescribing (according to prevailing treatment guidelines) are invariably related to different personal, structural and environmental factors. To overcome potential barriers for appropriate antimicrobial prescribing, tailor-made behavioral interventions matching those barriers are required.
Our experts are qualified and have experience in using implementation science in addressing behavior-related factors and behavior change in antimicrobial presdeibing and use.
