What is SPICE?
SPICE consists of a database of international experts with experience in IPC, infectious disease management and antimicrobial stewardship. Experts can be medical specialists, but also social, behavioral or implementation scientists. Hospital teams can submit a request for expertise through the SPICE platform, after which they are matched with an available expert who will coach them through the development, implementation and evaluation stages of their facility-based intervention. Across all SPICE projects, we focus on offering implementation support & encouraging local capacity sharing.
SPICE is governed by a Radboud Steering Committee, and receives technical and strategic advice from an external Advisory Board consisting of distinguished members in the infectious disease community.
How it works
The SPICE programme is governed by a Steering Committee. The SPICE Steering committee is advised on strategic and technical matters by an Advisory Board comprising distinguished members of the professional and policy community in the area.
To ensure strong ties and smooth collaboration with partners, SPICE signs Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) defining the scope and purpose of mutually beneficial activities directed at improving ID care worldwide.

Infectious disease management (IDM) essentially consists of identifying the microbial cause(s) of an infection, initiating - if necessary - antimicrobial therapy against microbes, and controlling host reactions to infection.
IDM requires collaboration to achieve more rapid, mutually beneficial and effective responses. This collaboration requires a comprehensive and strategic way of thinking about the problem of infectious diseases in order to minimize the impact.
Our experts have experience in a number of regions including Africa, South America, European Union, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
Why SPICE?
Local leadership
SPICE follows a bottom-up approach and operates only by explicit invitation from the host facility, ensuring local ownership. We support facility-based interventions to maximize their direct impact on the quality of patient care.
Sustainable impact
SPICE experts provide advisory support, coaching and technical guidance for project implementation. They do not interfere in clinical work, but support in building capacity at the host facility to identify and address infectious disease issues.
Quality care
SPICE partners with local, regional and international organizations to coordinate and strengthen efforts aimed at enhancing infectious disease care worldwide. Our goal is to build equitable, collaborative partnerships with healthcare institutions, non-governmental organizations, and governments to improving healthcare quality.
