Over Jorik Nonnekes
Jorik Nonnekes is an Associate Professor and consultant in rehabilitation medicine at the Radboud University Medical Centre and Sint Maartenskliniek, both located in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. He studied medicine (cum laude) at the Radboud University Nijmegen, and performed a scientific elective at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London.
In 2015, he obtained his PhD degree (cum laude), with his thesis entitled ‘Balance and gait in neurodegenerative disease: what startles tells u about motor control’. His thesis was awarded with the European Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine Prize, and thesis prizes of the Dutch Society for Movement Sciences, and the Dutch Society for Rehabilitation Medicine.
Both his clinical and scientific work focuses on gait and balance impairments in neurological diseases, with specific emphasis on gait impairments in Parkinson’s disease, rare and inherited movement disorders, and upper motor neuron lesions (eg stroke). Jorik leads his own research group and has published more than 120 papers in international peer-reviewed journals.
He received several grants including a prestigious ZonMW Veni (2018) and ZonMW OffRoad grant (2020). He was awarded with an Early Career Award from The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (2020) and an Early Career Award from the International Society for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (2023).
