Job description

We are looking for a talented PhD student who will join our research group ’Strenghts, positive aspects and resilience in neurodevelopmental conditions’ at the department of psychiatry. Within this research group we focus on investigating positive aspects and resilience in for example people with ADHD. We hope to provide a more balanced picture of challenges and opportunities in the context of ADHD. Also we hope to contribute to optimizing treatment for people with ADHD and contribute to prevention of negative concequences related to ADHD.

The position is part of the NWO-Vidi project of Dr. Hoogman. In the past, science has mainly focused on studying deficits associated with ADHD. However, research shows that people with ADHD experience positive aspects in addition to negative aspects. These have hardly been investigated. Hoogman’s research group has taken the first steps in this regard, by examining creativity, among other things.

The NWO-Vidi project looks more broadly at positive aspects and also examines other perspectives on those positive aspects (from partners, employers, teachers). The project also delves deeper into the positive aspects and the link with clinical factors, and finally, environmental factors that may play a role are also examined.

As a PhD candidate on this project, you will mainly focus on data from existing large datasets to investigate the neurobiology of positive aspects of ADHD, but also to see how environmental factors are related to the positive aspects. You will be part of a group of PhD students who are working on similar projects, and a postdoc who is also working on the same project, but is conducting her own (qualitative) studies. In addition, the group has a varying number of bachelor’s and master’s students, and a permanent part-time data steward.

The most important tasks associated with the position:

  • Participate in setting up research projects (generating hypotheses, co-creating, taking care of pre-registration, etc.).
  • Collecting, analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Supervising students.
  • Presenting research results at (inter)national conferences.
  • Publish results in scientific journals.
  • Possibly participate in outreach projects.
