Toin van Kuppevelt associate professor

Dr. van Kuppevelt is a trained biochemist and cell biologist, is associated professor at the Department of Biochemistry and since 2000 is head of the Matrix Biochemistry group.

Research focuses on the role of extracellular matrix molecules, notably proteoglycans, in health and disease. Special attention is given to glycosaminoglycans, the sugar moiety of proteoglycans, and their role in renal/lung pathology, and in cancer. In addition, matrix molecules such as collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans are used to construct molecularly-defined scaffolds for tissue engineering. The aim is to prepare smart scaffolds to generate specific tissues such as skin, cartilage and blood vessels.

Field of study

Biochemistry
