About Gert Meijer

Gert Meijer is fulltime Professor in Oral Implantology and Head at the Department of Implantology & Periodontology of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre. As an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon , he is also active at the Department of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery (head: Prof. dr. S.J. Bergé).

His daily activities comprise the full range of the reconstructive surgery, especially when endosseous implants are involved. He built up an extended clinical experience, as solely can be obtained in an university hospital. As an experienced lecturer, he focuses on subjects of bone reconstruction in combination with oral implant treatment. Furthermore, image-fusion, e.q. superimposing 3-D stereophotogrammetry on a cone-beam CT data set to allow optimal planning for endosseous intra- and extra-oral implants, has his full interest; he is co-developer in the '3-D computer guided implant placement program'.

In addition, Meijer has extensive experience in basic bone research, biologic behaviour of bone transplants, bone-biomaterial interface phenomena, bone cell cultures, osteoblast and osteoclast responses to biomaterials, bone bonding and biodegradation of biomaterials. He performed one of the first human studies, in which intra-oral defects were reconstructed with tissue-engineered bone.  He is an international well-known lecturer and published more than 100 scientific papers.
