About Frank Wagener

Frank Wagener studied Molecular Sciences at Wageningen University. He moved to New York to work at Rockefeller University and New York Medical College with Prof. dr Nader Abraham and obtained in 2002 his PhD at Radboudumc at the department of Tumor Immunology. After doing a postdoc at Pharmacology and Toxicology he moved to Dentistry – Orthodontics and Craniofacial Biology where he was appointed as assistant professor in 2009. During his scientific career he received grants from different organizations, including NWO VENI, Diabetes Foundation, European Union, ZonMW, Dutch Burns Foundation, and Dr Vaillant Foundation.

His research line focuses on the anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective effects of the heme oxygenase (HO) system and gasotransmitters. His group demonstrated that heme induces inflammation, whereas HO-activity attenuates adhesion molecules and leukocyte binding. Recently, it was demonstrated that by increasing bilirubin levels vascular function and redox status could be ameliorated in e.g. diabetes patients. He aims to develop novel strategies to prevent cleft lip and palate and to attenuate scar formation following injury. Hereto, both in vitro and in vivo models of wound healing, embryogenesis, and inflammatory networks are used.
