6 December 2024

The Radboudumc has had partnerships in Tanzania for more than fifty years. Healthcare is a high priority there and is now going through rapid development with an increasing focus on specialization and innovation. Within the Radboudumc Global Health program, we build long-term partnerships and invest in capacity exchange, medical education and joint research projects.

Recently, the Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's national academic hospital, has also become one of our cooperation partner. In addition to joint efforts in the field of infectious diseases, this partnership is aimed at strengthening fertility treatments. Infertility is an important but often underexposed problem in Tanzania. The collaboration improves access to and quality of fertility care in Tanzania.

Gynecologist Annemiek Nap: “It is important to collaborate globally so that good care can be provided anywhere in the world. In Tanzania, we have been working with various hospitals for years. We learn from each other and share expertise with each other in general care and also in specialist areas.”

In addition, Radboudumc is preparing a new partnership with the academic hospital in Dodoma, the political capital of Tanzania. Attention was also paid to bone marrow transplantation and 3D prosthesis, among others. Closer cooperation with the Tanzanian government is also important. There was also plenty of time reserved for this in the agenda.

Crucial role in healthcare

These initiatives are in line with the growing recognition in the Netherlands and Europe for the importance of sustainable and equivalent partnerships with academic institutions in Africa. Africa is seen as the continent of the future. From a political and economic perspective, Africa will increasingly become in a key position in the coming years. Healthcare plays a crucial role in this.

By sharing knowledge and expertise, Radboudumc not only contributes to improved healthcare in partner countries, but also to scientific and medical innovations. In this way, together with our partners on site, we strengthen the health and health care of people worldwide.

Fifty years in Tanzania

The Radboudumc strengthens its cooperation with Tanzania by entering into new partnerships with academic institutions and the Tanzanian government. These expansions mark a new phase in the long-term relationship between the Radboudumc and institutions in Tanzania, including the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC).
