We provide care to newborns with severe pulmonary hypertension due to meconium aspiration syndrome, sepsis/pneumonia or without a known cause.
As part of the treatment for newborns, ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, a kind of 'artificial lung' treatment) may be required. For newborns and children this takes place at the Radboudumc Amalia Children's Hospital or the Sophia Children's hospital in Rotterdam.
The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) has awarded us the 'Excellence in extracorporeal life support' Award three times.
Radboudumc’s center of expertise in Neonatal Pulmonary Hypertension is acknowledged by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
Our expertise
Our expertise focuses on the care of newborns with a severe pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs) for which ECMO treatment (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, a kind of 'artificial lung' treatment) is required.
In addition to the treatment of newborns, we have an aftercare program (outpatient follow-up) in collaboration with various fields of expertise.
For patients
Newborns with respiratory problems
Other children are often referred shortly after birth with severe respiratory problems requiring ECMO treatment.
Children with pulmonary diseases
There may also be older children who need ECMO treatment because of a pulmonary disease.
