Radboudumc and Maastricht UMC+ have formed the Academische Alliantie together since 2018. We work together in the areas of academic patient care, infrastructure, prevention, leading research, education, and training.

For the patient

We join forces and share expertise. The patient does not notice this at the front end but receives the best possible care as a result. The patient has the consultation at the place closest to home. At the back end, the expertise is combined and examinations are carried out at the most convenient location, either Nijmegen or Maastricht. The patient is discussed by the teams of both UMCs but then speaks to our professionals again at the place closest to home.

Efficient use of infrastructure and means

By doing so we also make efficient use of our infrastructure. In this way, quality and safety remain guaranteed. This is how pharmacies work together: we are working towards one joint department with one joint management. We ensure deduplication. The patient does not notice where the determinations take place but gets the necessary resources at the optimal location for them. In some places individuals work in both locations, which gives a unifying effect. It brings the teams together even more.

Close where possible, far when necessary

We are close enough to get along well, both in mileage and culture. But also distant enough: there is enough room for one's own identity. We not only catch each other's needs but strengthen each other. Through structural cooperation, patients can be helped closer to home sooner, even if the knowledge comes from elsewhere.

Our mission and vision for healthcare are very similar: we both want to be at the forefront of the development of sustainable care and contribute to people's health, in our region the Southeast of the Netherlands but also beyond that. The developments around us demand this of us, and increasingly demand innovative technologies and new care concepts.

Shaping the healthcare of the future

The Academische Alliantie enables us to do so in a better way. We complement and strengthen each other. Our cooperation creates synergy on the one hand, while on the other hand we are complementary to each other in our core tasks. This forms a solid basis for further development and innovation acceleration in healthcare, research, and education. The bundling of knowledge and expertise increases our innovative strength - a core value of UMCs; indispensable for shaping the care of the future.

For patients, the collaboration means a wider range of highly specialized care in their own region. In the field of education, and training, we create synergy, through joint offerings of chairs, courses, and internships. This offers our students more opportunities for development and broadening. Our researchers get more opportunities to accelerate innovations together, through joint research projects and shared infrastructure.

An academic heart

The Academische Alliantie, as the academic heart of Southeast Netherlands, occupies a powerful position, both in the national academic healthcare sector and in the region. In addition, it forms an important part of existing and new healthcare networks and chains of healthcare providers.

As Radboudumc, we want to be at the forefront of innovations and new developments and care concepts. With the highly specialized care we can offer to patients in our region and beyond with this alliance, we can have a meaningful impact on healthcare now and in the future.
