Research News New Scientist to crown top scientific talent of 2025

4 February 2025

In October 2025, New Scientist will crown the top scientific talent of the Netherlands and Flanders (including Brussels) for the eighth time: the New Scientist Science Talent 2025. Universities, research institutes, and colleges are invited to nominate one outstanding talent from their institution.

Over the past seven editions, all eighteen invited universities have participated. Since 2018, several independent research institutes have also joined, and last year, colleges were included as well. The jury and the public – with over 7,000 votes – selected Bernadette de Bakker, an assistant professor of embryology and fetal anatomy at Amsterdam UMC, as the winner.

Nominations

Institutions are encouraged to participate again this year. Confirmation of participation and contact details of the person responsible for the nomination should be submitted by Wednesday, February 5.

To learn more about the research of the candidates, institutions are asked to answer four questions provided in the attached document. The responses, along with other requested information, should be submitted by Monday, March 31.

The names of the fifteen nominees will be announced in the August 21 edition of New Scientist, and the public can vote via a digital ballot on newscientist.nl. After the voting closes, a panel of experts will review the top five candidates with the most votes and select a winner. The composition of the jury will be announced soon.

Prizes

The New Scientist Science Talent 2025 will receive a cash prize of €1500, a trophy, and media attention. The winner will also be invited to speak at the Science Gala on November 25, 2025, at the International Theater Amsterdam (ITA). A recap of the 2024 Science Gala can be found here.
