After weeks of preparation, the Radboudumc PhD Retreat finally kicked off on 26 March, bringing together PhD candidates from across departments for two inspiring days of science, network, and a lot of fun. With a program packed full of oral and poster presentations, skill-building workshops, company network and social moments, the retreat offered a unique space to reflect, share, and grow as early-career researchers.
After a warm welcome from scientific director Guillén Fernández, the day continued with parallel oral presentations. PhD candidates shared their research, practiced their communication skills, and exchanged valuable feedback across a wide range of topics. “It was great to share my work, even though I was a bit nervous.” “The questions were really helpful and gave me new perspectives and ideas to strengthen my project moving forward.”
The afternoon kicked off with a dynamic “choose a side” debate on the influence of social media in research peer pressure, sparking thoughtful conversations. “It was fun and engaging and sometimes it was very difficult to choose a side.” This was followed by a lively company market with ThermoFisher, Novogene, Merck, Miltenyi Biotec, and CliniSciences, alongside an engaging poster session where participants shared their work and exchanged feedback.
One of the highlights was the keynote lecture by Sander Spanenburg, who delivered an honest and relatable talk titled “Early Career Dilemmas and Doubts.” His words resonated deeply, sparking thoughtful conversations among peers about uncertainty, growth, and redefining success. After a long day of activities, the night ended in bright colors with a neon-party.
The second day kicked off with a high-energy workshop by Ekki Lemmink titled “How to Be a Productivity Ninja.” With a mix of humor and hands-on strategies, Ekki guided participants through techniques to improve focus, manage time effectively, and handle the constant demands of academic life. "The workshop was surprisingly energizing and easy to keep attention even after the amazing party. It was fun, practical, and packed with tips I’ll definitely take with me into my daily routine.”
The afternoon featured the second round of poster sessions and oral presentations, culminating in the final poster pitch round, followed by the closing ceremony where the top two posters and presentations were recognized with awards.
More than just a break from the lab, the PhD Retreat offered a rare chance to step back, connect with and grow. Whether through a scientific exchange, a laugh on the dancefloor, or a new idea sparked at a company booth, everyone walked away with something valuable. A big thank you to the PhD organization committee for their hard work in making this retreat possible, and to all participants for bringing such energy, openness, and inspiration to the event. We are all looking forward for the next years edition.
