Kuntal Worah (photo up) and Till Mathan, theme Cancer development and immune defense published a comprehensive quantitative proteomic comparison of four human blood-derived dendritic cell-like subsets in Cell Reports.

Dendritic cells

Dendritic cells (DCs) play a key role in orchestrating adaptive immune responses. In human blood three distinct subsets can be distinguished: plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs) and BDCA3+ and CD1c+ myeloid DCs (mDCs). In addition, a DC-like CD16+ monocyte has been reported. Although their ability to perform basic DC functions and their RNA-expression profiles have been previously compared, it is still largely unknown what subset-unique proteins make each subset functionally distinct. Here, authors exploited label-free quantitative mass spectrometry, to compare and identify differences in primary human DC subset proteins. Moreover, through integration of proteomic and transcriptomic data, the authors derive cell specific expression signatures for each subset that provide a resource for study of subset functional specialization.

The study was supervised by Sonja Buschow and Carl Figdor.
