During the yearly Digital Pathology meeting in Utrecht, Jeroen van der Laak was awarded the MedicalPhit Innovation Award.

The award was won for the CAMELYON16 grand challenge. This was a worldwide competition, organized by the digital pathology research group of Radboudumc. CAMELYON16 was highly succesful, with up to 300 teams downloading a large set of data to work on a clinically relevant problem: detection of metastases in sentinel lymph node tissue sections of breast cancer patients. As a result of this challenge, there is now a computer algorithm that equals the performance of pathologists in this tedious task. Lead organizer of CAMELYON16 was Babak Ehteshami Bejnordi.
