Effective March 1, pediatric endocrinologist Hedi Claahsen has been appointed professor of Differences in Sex Development & Transgendercare at the Radboud university medical center/Radboud University. Her research focuses on steroid hormone metabolism and steroid hormone treatment in DSD and transgender care.
Within the Radboud Expertise Center Sex & Gender (REGG), two main themes are central: Differences in Sex Development (DSD) and transgender care. As founder and coordinator of this Expertise Center, Hedi Claahsen is committed to excellent patient care, research and education but also to themes such as diversity, identity, autonomy and other moral and ethical aspects. With her research, Hedi Claahsen contributes to national and international connection and will thus, on behalf of the Radboud university medical center, take a leading role within transgender and DSD care.
Hedi L. Claahsen (1966, Kranenburg (Germany)) was first trained as a nurse in Kleve, Germany, after obtaining the German Abitur. She began her study in medicine at the Radboud University in Nijmegen in 1989 and obtained her doctor's degree in 1993. She completed her training as a pediatrician and pediatric endocrinologist in 2002 and 2006. In 2007, she obtained her PhD with her thesis called ‘Adrenal rest tumors in congenital adrenal hyperplasia’. During her PhD, she investigated various functional features and clinical aspects of adrenal residual tumors in men with adrenogenital syndrome.
Pediatric Endocrinology
In 2014, Hedi Claahsen was appointed head of the pediatric endocrinology sub-division at Radboud university medical center. In 2015 she became Principal Clinican and in the same year she was appointed associate professor. In addition to her work at Radboud university medical center, she is chair of the scientific committee at the international I CAH/DSD registry and since 2010 chair of the national advisory committee on neonatal screening CAH. Furthermore, she is a member of the medical ethics review committee, HCP representative of the European reference network ENDO ERN and Associate Editor of the European Journal of Endocrinology. With her research, she awarded in 2019the Dietrich Knorr Prize for the best publication in the field of adrenal research. In 2021 she received the NVE Award for dedication and achievements in the field of endocrinology within and outside the Netherlands. In addition, she maintains a close collaboration with Diponegro University in Semarang, Indonesia where she was invited as a visiting professor in 2018.
