On 15 September, the International Mental Health Association (IMHA) will gather for their first meeting. During this meeting, the partnership between various healthcare organizations in the Nijmegen region will be signed. On the initiative of the Proment Foundation, the HAN University of Applied Sciences, the Radboudumc, ProPersona and GGZ Oost-Brabant declare to be committed to the projects within the IMHA, they want to work together on the basis of equality. In this way they want to promote knowledge exchange in the field of mental health care in and with LAMICS (Low and Middle Income Countries).

Background

According to WHO, 1 in 4 people will need mental health care at some point in their lives, but in many countries there is still too little investment in mental health care. Especially in LAMICS a situation exists where there is too little knowledge and resources to adequately help people.

In cooperation with staff from Radboudumc, the HAN and various GGZ institutions in the region, the Proment Foundation has set up the International Mental Health Alliance (IMHA), with the aim of setting up a broad GGZ knowledge exchange in a regional equal cooperation. This knowledge will be used particularly in LAMICS countries in the field of mental health care in order to reduce the 'mental health gap' mentioned by the WHO.

Vision

The IMHA wants to encourage collaboration among health care providers by working with multiple training and care organizations to improve mental health care.
Also, they want to extend our cooperation to volunteers of the WPA, especially also the colleagues in Belgium. They believe that interprofessional and international cooperation with exchange of knowledge in the field of mental health will contribute to a better mental health care of humanity in general.
