It is with great sadness that we inform you that our much-loved colleague Prof. Aart Schene passed away last week. Aart had been absent since September last year due to a serious illness. Since then, in addition to concentrating on the treatment of his illness, he has remained in close contact with his colleagues. In recent weeks, however, his situation deteriorated to such an extent that he passed away on Wednesday last week. This week, his farewell will be held in private.

Aart had been Professor and Department Head of Psychiatry at the Radboudumc since 2014. His impressive career and merits for psychiatry in the Netherlands and abroad, were crowned this year with an exceptional honorary membership of the Dutch Society for Psychiatry. Aart has always devoted himself tirelessly and passionately to the quality of life of psychiatric patients and to standards of care with which psychiatrists can do their work even better.

Last summer Aart also received the newly instituted Donders Medal to honour his contribution to the Donders Institute. His pivotal role in the interweaving of clinical and fundamental research within the Donders Institute and the Radboudumc was highly appreciated. The many collaborations with Donders colleagues and guidance of a large number of Donders PhD students are proof of his success.
