Hans de Wilt received a Dutch Cancer Society Grant of 625K euros for the STARTREC trial. The STARTREC trail is an international trial for patients with early cancer in the distal rectum

These patients can undergo complete resection of the rectum, including all lymph nodes with a high chance of cure (90-95%), but also with a high risk for a permanent colostomy. In this trial patients can either undergo this treatment or will be randomized for one of two organ preservation arms. This means treatment with radiation therapy or chemoradiation therapy and no or limited surgery in case of a good clinical response. The number of organ preservation and quality of life differences between the different treatment arms will be some of the end points of this trial. This might lead to a paradigm shift in the treatment of rectal cancer.
