News items Call for research proposals for Lowlands Science 2025

18 February 2025

Imagine this: you have access to 65,000 enthusiastic individuals for three days who can participate in your research. What would you like to discover? During the Lowlands festival, attendees not only enjoy music but also eagerly visit the Lowlands Science research area, a unique and ideal spot for scientists. You can now submit your research proposal for Lowlands Science on August 15th, 16th, and 17th, 2025. The deadline for submissions is March 28th.

Since 2015, Lowlands Science has been highly successful, with Radboudumc hosting numerous research teams. This year again, Lowlands invites researchers from colleges, universities, and other research institutions to submit proposals for research during the festival. If the quality and feasibility (financially) are satisfactory, the possibilities are vast.

Criteria for application:

  • It involves scientific research often conducted in a lab setting but which benefits from the live setting provided by Lowlands Science;
  • The primary objective is to collect research data. Education or awareness may be the secondary objective though;
  • The research lends itself to an engaging public experience. The proposers have an idea for this and can implement it themselves;
  • The research topic is relevant and interesting to Lowlands visitors and matches their experience: 18-40 years old, curious, urban-oriented

The application includes:

  • Research institution/organization name
  • Name of principal investigator
  • Department/faculty/training name
  • Research title (concept)
  • The research question
  • Explanation of the research in up to three (lay) sentences
  • What does the festival visitor experience/do/experience during the research?
  • What is the social relevance of the research?
  • Check for the previously mentioned criteria.
  • Check for own contribution of €6000,- ex VAT.
  • Check for permission of the ethics committee.
  • An upload of the research proposal in PDF of max. 10MB and max. 3 A4 containing at least:
    • Social relevance and reason for the research
    • Research question, objectives, hypotheses and/or expectations?
    • What does the visitor experience/do/learn during the research?
    • Method and design of the research/plan of action, including list of required materials and space. How much space, what technical resources? Please include drawn-in floor plan of the container.
    • How will the information/data obtained at Lowlands be used for ongoing research?
    • Why does this research benefit from this research population and setting?
    • How will you provide an attractive format and design?
    • Name, phone number and email address of team contact person.
    • Brief resume of the principal investigator

Submit your research proposal by March 28th via the Lowlands website. By the end of April, submitters will be notified if they are selected to conduct the research.
