On Wednesday, August 14, Mark van den Boogaard, researcher of Delirium - Prediction and Prevention, and lead researcher of World Delirium Awareness Day in the Netherlands, together with a large number of delirium experts, will receive the Delirium Flag.
The flag's journey began on World Delirium Awareness Day in 2023 and will visit more than 100 locations until the next Delirium Awareness Day in 2025. Participants sign the flag, demonstrating their commitment to raising awareness about delirium worldwide.
Importance of attention to Delirium
Acute confusion, also known as delirium, is common among hospital patients. The issues surrounding delirium are not always recognized or acknowledged. Therefore, every year on the second Wednesday in March, there is a special World Delirium Awareness Day (WDAD). On this day, extra attention is brought to delirium worldwide.
The Flag Travels the World
The flag began its journey on World Delirium Awareness Day 2023 at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein in Germany and traveled through Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Belgium before arriving in Nijmegen on August 14. From here, the journey continues to England and then through Scotland, Ireland, Canada, the United States, Mexico, and several other South American countries, finally returning to Schleswig-Holstein.
The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of preventing, recognizing, and treating delirium, and to encourage people worldwide to work together to reduce its impact.
On March 12, 2025, it will be World Delirium Awareness Day again, and Mark and his team from Radboudumc will once again draw special attention to delirium.
