Film festival InScience is back! This festival, featuring no less than 53 films with a scientific touch, will take place this year from March 12th to 17th. The main location of InScience is the LUX film theater in Nijmegen. As every year, experts from Radboudumc contribute to various programs, including those related to kidney transplants, language use in video consultations, and mindfulness.
For six days, InScience will screen the most impressive science films released in the past year, totaling 53 titles, with over thirty premieres. Each film screening will be accompanied by a discussion, in which filmmakers, top scientists, and other experts will delve deeper into the films before or after the screening. Experts and researchers from Radboudumc will also participate in various program components.

A Still Small Voice - featuring Anne Speckens
In A Still Small Voice, we follow chaplain Mati at work in the hospital, where she learns to provide spiritual care to people facing profound life changes.
TALK: Breathe in, breathe out. Anne Speckens guides the audience into silence. She researches the use of mindfulness for healthcare workers dealing with high work pressure and stressful conditions.

Fauna - featuring Judith Homberg and Jos Smits
Goatherd Valeriano lives on the outskirts of Barcelona, next to a laboratory for animal experiments, where he also works. As he witnesses his profession slowly dying out, scientists seem busier than ever with their pursuit of new medicines and vaccines. A documentary that connects humans, nature, and science through the personal story of this goatherd, who is sick and numbs his pain with pills.
TALK: Animal experiments, a necessary evil? Does medical innovation decline without animals for experimentation, or can we manage with alternatives? Before the film, we will have a discussion. Judith Homberg conducts behavioral research with rats and advocates for experiments as animal-friendly as possible. Jos Smits develops skin organoids: pieces of cultured skin.

Stand-up Science in LUX Café - featuring Martijn and Wyke Stommel
From minor ailments to serious diagnosis discussions: since the pandemic, video consultations with doctors have become commonplace. But how does the interaction between patient and doctor via a screen actually work? That's what surgeon Martijn Stommel and conversation scientist Wyke Stommel (Radboud University) wondered too. The brother and sister joined forces to examine similarities and differences between video consultations and hospital consultations.

The Inventor – featuring Lucas Boer
A charming stop-motion adventure about the life of the legendary scientist and artist Leonardo da Vinci, focusing primarily on his insatiable curiosity and experimental drive. With his work, he tries to find the answer to the ultimate question: what is the meaning of life? The joyful animated film for young and old is directed by Pixar veteran Jim Capobianco, who previously wrote the screenplay for Ratatouille.
TALK: What can we learn from Leonardo Da Vinci's endless curiosity? And how would he express it with today's techniques? Lucas Boer is a preparator and curator at the Museum of Anatomy and Pathology. He takes us on a journey through our bodies. A tour we will follow through human preparations and using VR glasses to delve deeper into body parts.

Confessions of a Good Samaritan – featuring Maaike Bennett and Marije Baas
Would you donate a kidney to someone you don't know to save their life? Filmmaker Penny Lane embarks on a personal journey to explore the nature of altruism by donating one of her kidneys to a stranger in Confessions of a Good Samaritan. In her documentary, she delves into the ethical questions surrounding organ transplantation and delves into philosophy and sociology.
TALK: Together, we will explore the factors influencing the choice for kidney donation to family, friends, or strangers. We will do this with Maaike Bennett and Marije Baas from our kidney donation team. We will discuss the process of organ donations and the ethical issues involved.
