News items Learn more about AI, 4Days Marches Research, sustainability and Parkinson's disease

11 July 2023

During the Nijmegen 4Days Marches and Vierdaagsefeesten, several scientists from Radboud university medical center give short lectures. Would you like to know more about AI for health, the 4Daagse research, sustainability in the hospital or Parkinson's disease? Then drop by. You will find Radboudumc and other institutions and companies from Nijmegen during the 4Days Marches at Mariënburgplein, right in the center of Nijmegen. Find out more about Radboudumc and the 4Days Marches.

Besides being the city of the 4Days Marches and Vierdaagsefeesten, Nijmegen is also known as the Health & High Tech hotspot of the Netherlands. Did you know that your smartphone does not work without a chip from Nijmegen? That scientists from Nijmegen were part of the team that took the first pictures of the black hole in space? And that in our city we are building the most powerful MRI scanner in the world?

Between the festivities this year, you can unwind at the Health & High Tech lounge on Mariënburgplein. At the same time, you will discover stories of innovative knowledge institutions and companies and get to know the city in a different way. On Saturday, July 15 and Sunday, July 16, various scientists and companies will give various mini-lectures in the Mariënburgkapel.

Mini lectures by Radboudumc experts

Hugo Touw - How to reduce waste after surgery

Saturday, July 15, 5:00-5:30 p.m.

In hospitals, many materials are used only once and then thrown away. For example, one open-heart surgery produces 27 kilograms of waste. And in the 24 hours that follow, another 5 kilos or so are added. This can and must change, Hugo Touw, intensivist at Radboudumc thought. What of that enormous mountain can we omit, reuse or replace with more sustainable materials? Only through proper research can we find out. And can we reduce that mountain of waste.

Anouk Tosserams - How people with parkinson's disease can walk better by creative 'tricks'

Saturday, July 15, 5:30-6:00 p.m.

Walking is something we normally don't really have to think about: we do it on our "automatic pilot. In people with Parkinson's disease, this is not so obvious. In them, that automatic pilot no longer works well, making walking more difficult. Fortunately, there are a number of "tricks" that people often discover themselves to still get ahead: for example, walking to the rhythm of music, hopping, or imitating the movements of another person. How is that possible? Anouk Tosserams, physician-researcher at Radboudumc and the Donders Institute found out.

Geert Litjens - AI as a multi-specialist in healthcare

Sunday, July 16, 4:30-5:00 p.m.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become indispensable in Dutch healthcare. Using AI algorithms, we monitor patients in the ICU and assess photos in the breast cancer screening program. These AI systems have one thing in common: they are all hyper-specialists in a very small field. The future is different as far as Geert Litjens, professor of AI at Radboudumc, is concerned. AI will be the radiologist, pathologist and oncologist all in one. With AI as a multi-specialist, we learn from all the data about a disease. So we can help patients much more accurately.

Maria Hopman - 15 years of 4Days Marches Research

Sunday, July 16, 6:00-6:30 p.m.

Almost anyone can walk the 4Days Marches, the first day is the hardest for walkers and the body temperature of runners rises by about 1 degree. We know this and more because of Radboudumc's annual 4Days Marches Research, which is taking place for the 15th time this year. Maria Hopman, Professor of Physiology and research leader, tells us more about the most important research results of the past 15 years. She also talks about how this year's research returns to where it all began: the heart, fluid balance and body temperature.
