Ignacio Malagon, first professor of Pediatric Anaesthesiology in the Netherlands

In the past, Professor Malagon held various positions in the Netherlands, including paediatric cardiac anaesthesia and intensive carei at the Leiden University Medical Center (1999- 2007) and the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital in Utrecht (2007-2009). The perioperative care around paediatric cardiac surgery has always been his special interest.
Since 2011 he has been working as consultant in cardiac anaesthesia and intensive care at the University Hospital South Manchester, UK. In 2013 he became Honorary Senior Lecturer; research interests include ECMO (Extra Corporal Membrane Oxygenation) and postoperative complications after cardiac surgery. In 2016 he became a consultant and clinical advisor to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
Ignacio Malagon is the first professor of Pediatric Anaesthesiology at Radboud University and in the Netherlands: “Pediatric Anaesthesiology is a unique discipline. After all, children are not small adults.”
Ignacio Malagon is met ingang van 1 januari 2019 benoemd tot hoogleraar Kinderanesthesiologie aan de Radboud Universiteit/Radboudumc. Hij is de eerste hoogleraar op dit gebied in Nederland.
Ignacio Malagon (Madrid, 1962) attended the medical training at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, where he received his Licenciado Medicina Cirugia in 1986. From 1990 to 1999 he trained as an anaesthetist in the United Kingdom and completed a clinical fellowship at the BC Children's Hospital Vancouver, Canada.
