We are a university medical center

As a university medical center, we have three core tasks: patient care, research and education & training. These activities are intertwined in many ways. Our research, fundamental and applied, is ultimately meant for application in patient care. And patient care is a breeding ground for innovative research ideas and innovations in the organization of patient care and education. Our professors, medical specialists, physicians, and nurses combine care with research and, in many cases, teaching too. Our students of Medicine come into contact with patients and care from the very first day of their studies. Only through the focus on and collaboration between our three core tasks can we achieve our mission: to have a significant impact on health and healthcare.

Patient care

Radboudumc offers top referent and top clinical care. This means the emphasis is on patients who require highly complex treatment or who have a rare condition. Radboudumc thus has a national (expert) function for fellow healthcare institutions. For example, we house centers of expertise, including for rare disorders. Experts work here who know a lot about a particular disease; about the correct diagnosis, the best treatment, the right guidance, (after)care, and scientific research. We also have approvals (licenses) for almost all special functions, as laid down in the Dutch Special Medical Operations Act. These are usually treatments that require advanced equipment, special facilities or specific expertise.

Scientific research

With our scientific research, which is of internationally recognized high quality, we gain new insights that lead the way to sustainable, innovative, and affordable healthcare. It helps us achieve breakthroughs in understanding, diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases. We do not just focus on the rare diseases, but also on the larger population diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and dementia. Research also contributes to the education of our healthcare professionals. With all our scientific research we aim to respond to the needs of society. We want it to have an impact on people and society, on health, and healthcare. Thus, with our scientific research we not only improve patient care in the Radboudumc, but also care and health outside of it. For it is our social task to share knowledge, disseminate it and bring it to value in practice. Where possible, we bring scientific research to the market, for example through spin-off companies, patents, and public-private partnerships.

Education and training

Radboudumc trains the doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals of tomorrow. To this end, we have an extensive range of education, schooling, and training programs. Among other things, we provide almost all recognized medical education:

  • Academic education in Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Mechanisms of Disease, Cognitive Neuroscience, and Quality and Safety in Patient care.
  • Continuing education for (medical) specialists
  • Post-academic and post applied sciences education
  • Nursing and paramedical education

All our education and training activities are brought together in Radboudumc Health Academy.

Our mission: to have a significant impact on health and healthcare.
